The team at Surge are constantly helping each other to develop and learn about different aspects of the huge world of digital marketing.
As an area of business with so much to offer and so many new things to discover, we believe that those thinking of delving into digital marketing in the future should have the opportunity to learn a little more about it from people who explore new techniques and implement strategies every day. For this reason, we’ve recently taken on some work experience students and would love to invite more into the office in the coming months.
What do work experience students do?
While every department is generally always fast-paced and busy, we take the time to sit with work experience students, answer any questions they have and allocate jobs to them that will give them a taste of work and be of genuine value to our team.
Marketing
If the student is interested in Marketing, we can help them understand the different areas we focus on and give them tasks to help them improve their skills. They will be able to share their ideas for social media campaigns, write blogs and articles for SEO, carry out research activities and sit with each member of the team individually to get a real feel for what they do.
Design
If they are interested in Design, work experience students will have the chance to learn about vital platforms such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign as well as putting their skills to the test by creating designs for business cards, logos and web pages. The team will talk them through their typical design process and be happy to answer any questions they have.
Development
Development is often seen as the most complex service we offer, and those interested in website build will be able to see first-hand how a website is put together. Whether they want to learn the basics of code, explore different ways to use the back end of a website or learn about complicated web functionality, the team will be able to answer their questions and help them expand their knowledge.
A word from past work experience students…
Liam, a school pupil from Nunthorpe Academy, spent a week working with all departments. He was helpful, enthusiastic and a pleasure to have in the office. Here’s what he thought of his experience at Surge…
*“My week at Surge Marketing Solutions was great! I felt very welcome and everyone was really nice to me, helping me if I was struggling and explaining what they were doing when I was shadowing them. On my first day I met everyone and then worked with Sophie, Declan and Gemma. They were very helpful when I shadowed them and learnt what type of things they do and then I wrote a blog post with help from Sophie. Then I worked with Sarah and learnt about everything she does and helped her with some of her jobs.
On my second day I worked with Chloe and Mark. During the morning I shadowed them and learnt about the software they use to do their designs and the process they go through. After that, I began designing my own logo and business cards. Chloe and Mark helped design the logos on paper, giving me ideas, and then Chloe helped me a lot with getting used to the software, giving me ideas for what I could design, and helped me do the things I wanted to do.
On my third day I sat in a meeting with Declan, Gemma, Sophie and David and learnt how they come up with ideas. Then I worked with Chris and Tyler and learnt about what they use to do the code for the websites and they told me about the basics of website development. They also spent a lot of time explaining the development and the type of problems they deal with and how they fix them.
On my fourth day I finished some of the work I was doing and began to design my own website. At first I did some research and some designs on paper and then I started my actual design on the computer with help from Chloe.
On my last day I finished my website design and went back and added some details to my other designs. After that I worked with Lynsey and learnt about sales, finding out more about the process of things. Then I did a portfolio of all the work I had done with help from Chloe.”*
Amy, a Media Studies student from Teesside University, also joined us for a week of work experience and made a great impression. She was working alongside the Marketing team and had a particular interest in Social Media. We invited Amy back to the office to spend a further three weeks with us before starting her third year of university – she’s currently in her second week of this period and doing a great job! Here’s what she had to say about working with Surge…
“In such a short time, I feel like I have learnt a great deal from being at Surge and gained new skills, such as how to write SEO articles. Working with Sophie and the Marketing team and listening to their advice has helped me to decide that a career in marketing is for me. Everyone was lovely and made me feel very welcome straight away in such a fun working environment.”
